| Sakya Centre |
| |
|
| |
Sakya Centre is the principal seat
of the Sakyapa Order of Tibetan Buddhism. It is the
personal monastery of His Holiness Sakya Trizin, the
Supreme Head of the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism.
Since its establishment in 1964, the Centre as a monastic
institute, has been offering traditional education in
the Buddhist religion, rituals, ritual music and dance,
art and other related subjects for young novices. The
Centre is a charitable institution and is duly registered
with the Government of India. |

Every year,
the Centre welcomes students from all over India
and from neighbouring countries like Nepal,
Mongolia and Bhutan. The present strength of
the Center is about 300. The number of students
increases every year with new entrants joining
the Centre regularly.

| Problems faced
in Sakya Centre |
| |
|
| |
Although, the Sakya Centre
does its best to provide for all aspects of
the life of the residents including food, clothing
and shelter, the limited premises imposes restriction
due to lack of space and proximity to the town.
In order to accommodate the ever-growing number
of new applicants into the monastic life and
to ensure a good education, there is a proposal
to start a separate monastic school to train
young novices. The new school would relieve
pressure on the Sakya Centre.
We have observed that the world has made
rapid developments in every sphere of life
and it has become imperative to keep ourselves
in tune with the changing times. We have often
felt the need to study modern education in
our lives. For example: most of the monks
don't know what is a balance diet, many have
to find a person to write postal address etc.
Communication with the people of other community
is another big problem that we face. Therefore,
teaching modern education along with traditional
Buddhist philosophies has become a necessity.
His Holiness Sakya Trizin has initiated this
new academy and its realization will be taken
care of by his younger son Khondung Gyana
Vajra.

| Sakya Academy |
| |
|
| |
The principle aim of the
Sakya Academy is to impart the young novices
with a very good Buddhist education and preservation
and dissemination of the precious dharma teachings
of Lord Buddha. Another aim is to keep alive
the unique teachings and traditions of the Sakyapa
masters. The Academy will also provide a modern
education to help the students to relate to
the outside world and make sure that their Buddhist
learning is relevant to it.
The proposed site of the project is 7 kms.
from Dehra Dun city, situated in about 23
acres of peaceful and secluded land far away
from the madding crowd. With very few local
inhabitants, the area offers a very conducive
atmosphere for a modern education together
with practice of profound teachings.
The project aims to accommodate and train
500 monks, and the initial target will be
125 residential students. The projected cost
of the construction and furnishing of the
Sakya Academy is approximately around 13 crore
Indian Rupees. An additional sum of same amount
will be sought to run and maintain the school
facility exclusively. The annual interest
of the stipulated fund would ensure the day-
to-day running of the school without disruption.
The project is expected to begin as soon as
the Indian government clears the project proposal.
The completion of project will depend on availability
of funds and its release. However we would
like to complete the construction at its earliest
possible time.
Upon completion, the academy will have facilities
such as a library that housing Buddhist canons,
modern works of literature and sciences, fully
equipped science laboratories, sports facilities
and computer equipments, intended to the full
growth of mind, understanding of the science,
geography and the world.
Since most of the monks come from a very
poor families, the education provided at the
Sakya Academy will be free of cost.

| Future goals
|
| |
|
| |
The Academy will aim to
produce students of resolute character who will
serve their community and its peoples using
the knowledge, values and skills gained through
education at the Academy. Students will have
the option of joining a monastic life or continue
as lay citizens and all training in the Academy
will be directed towards promoting a deep understanding
of the canons, practices and rituals of the
Sakyapa Order of Tibetan Buddhism as well as
practical training for leading the life of a
lay person.
The School will offer an outstanding academic
and religious programme, which is unique. It
will prepare students for the Indian School
Certificate and will strive and encourage outstanding
students to go for the Diploma of the International
Baccalaureate or any other well recognized examination
at the Grade XI and XII levels, the latter being
a demanding set of external examinations recognized
for entry to universities around the world.
All students will be provided with the opportunity
to discover themselves and prepare them for
their role as responsible citizens to face the
challenges of a new millennium.
We will also train monks to
help in relief works during natural catastrophes
such as earthquakes, fire rescue and flood,
which has been a common occurring in India for
several years.

| Organisation |
| |
|
| |
The School will be run
and managed by the board of Gyana Vajra Charitable
Trust headed by His Holiness Sakya Trizin. The
school organization structure will be divided
into two segments - the Academic Section under
the charge of the Headmaster and the Administrative
Section, which will be managed by the Administrator.
Both these posts will be filled under the direction
of the Board of Governors and will report independently
to the Board of Governors during their periodic
meetings. Broadly, the Academic Section will
include the educational activities of the School
while the Administrative section will include
finance, purchase, maintenance and establishment
sections. The Society will be appointing a Board
of Governors to manage the affairs of the School.
The Headmaster of the School will also be the
Secretary to the Board of Governors. An Administrator
who will also be a member of the Board will
be overall in charge of the School Administration.
We are planning to start the project initially
with 125 small monks and as per completion of
building; we will induct more small monks.
