Sakya Centre also manages and looks after the Sakya Institute located in Puruwala, Himachal Pradesh. This residential institute offers further education for monks at a Bachelor and Masters level in Buddhist philosophy and thought with particular emphasis on aspects of the Sakya Tradition. It offers free education to over 100 monks from different monasteries in India and other neighboring countries. The purpose of this institute is to train monks to become the next generation of teachers with a strong foundation in Buddhist philosophy.
A long time project of Sakya Centre has been to establish a charitable hospital to provide affordable health care to monks, nuns and the local community. The hospital which is located behind the Centre was formally opened in 2000.
The hospital has 22 beds, 3 outpatient departments, a dental clinic an X-ray department and a pharmacy. The hospital is open 24 hours and employs three physicians as well as a doctor specialising in Tibetan medicine. The hospital charges minimal fees for consultation, bed and other facilities it offers. In the past three years, the hospital has treated more than 15,000 patients the majority being poor and needy.
Sakya Nunnery is situated in an elevated position near Dehradun, a few kilometres from the Palace of His Holiness Sakya Trizin and the Sakya Monastery. The Nunnery has over 165 nuns ranging from the age of 9 to 40. The nunnery has a staff of 15 including teachers.
Some of the nuns come from Nepal, Bhutan and neighbouring Himalayan region. However, most of the nuns come from Tibet and have left behind family and friends. The Nunnery is their home as it is almost impossible for them to return, or even visit Tibet. Many have traveled by foot through dangerous circumstances and difficult mountain passes.
